Cars will hit the race track for the first time in 2026 tomorrow April 10th, part of open practice day for the 52nd running of the Icebreaker Weekend at the Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park. The racing action will get underway from the Big-T on Saturday, April 11th with the Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series headlining the opening day card with the Propane Plus 75.
The R&R Open Street Stocks will also invade the ⅝ mile oval for 50 green flag laps to open up their 2026 season. Pro Truck Challenge, Thompson Sunoco Modifieds, NEMA Lights and the Thunderstock Crown Vics will round out the April 11th racing action.
Sunday, April 12th the pit gates will be thrown open at 8:00am with track drivers meeting to follow at 8:30am. The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will roll out the gate onto the ⅝ mile for the first time in 2026 for round one practice from 12:00pm to 12:50pm. Support divisions will see the track for rotating practice from 12:50pm to 1:25pm before the NASCAR Whelen Modifieds hit the speedway for final practice at 1:25pm.
The first green flag of Sunday’s Icebreaker racing action will come at 2:00pm with qualifying heat races for the SK Light Modifieds, followed by the Late Models, Thompson Sunoco Modifieds, and Street Stocks. Opening Ceremonies will kick off directly after the final heat for the Street Stocks and the SK Light Mods will kick start the feature racing action with a 20 lap main event. The Late Models will take the big stage for 25 laps, followed by a 30 lap feature for the Sunoco Modifieds. The stars of the Whelen Modified Tour will fire off for qualifying with single car, two laps to set the starting grid. The Thompson Street Stocks will round out the weekly racing card with a 20 lap feature event before NASCARs oldest division roars to life for the 52nd annual Icebreaker 150 for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour.
Tyler Rypkema who leads the Whelen Modified Tour standings in 2026 has to be at the top of the favorites list heading into race number three of the new season. Justin Bonsignore is looking to make history by tying Mike Stefanik for the all-time wins (14) in Whelen Mod history at the Connecticut oval. Coming off his first career win on the Whelen Modified Tour Stephen Kopcik looks to keep his hot streak alive rolling into Thompson on Sunday. Defending Champion Austin Beers, multi-time Thompson winner Ron Silk, the USNE Power #1 of Patrick Emerling are all on the favorites card for this weekend’s Icebreaker 150 from Thompson.
Sunday’s event also plays as round one of the Connecticut Challenge which consists of the three 150 lap events at Thompson and the series return to the Stafford Motor Speedway. The winner will receive a bounce of $7,500 dollars!
